I really think this series is very interesting and such a great way to introduce a different, very visual way of looking at information. I just felt like I needed more information. And then there were a few that had me wanting more information about the infographic and it’s information, like the page which featured a graphic focussed on the ethnic diversity and activities of various global gangs: the mafia, the yakuza and the sinaloa cartel, which led me to wondering why they chose these three gangs and not others, and why this information and not what kinds of guns they use or who they target, what they do…. While Sports and Literature, Film and Music all have specific subjects, Life, the Universe and Everything features about twelve infographics about space (which is a lot in a book with only 80 pages), a comparison of the countries of the world’s chocolate consumption (France won!), a graphic about global vacuuming habits, how long it would take you to fall from various tall structures etc… etc… Among the variety were also some very familiar graphs, like an infographic comparing brain sizes from the smallest to largest living creatures and certainly some of the space graphics we’ve all seen before and weren’t incredibly ground breaking. I found the selection of information presented entirely unfocused, which is perhaps just a flaw in the concept behind this particular book. Where I loved the literature edition and was mystified by the sports infographics, this general interest book was both wonderful and, well, really random, for lack of a better word. While reading through the Infographic Guide to Life, the Universe and Everything I found myself somewhere in the middle. Inforgraphic Guide to Life, the Universe and Everything This, however, was to be expected as I am very much not a sports fan. Well I too generally need words to understand what I am looking at. Creating and interpreting graphs and therefore graph ics has never been my strong suit. The Infographic Guide to Life, the Universe and Everything‘s author, Thomas Eaton (each of the books are authored by specialists in their respective fields) credits Florence Nightengale (that famous nurse) in 1857 that used infographics to convince Queen Victoria to improve conditions in military hospitals, showing visually that poor conditions cost lives.Īre there going to be words? LIFE IS FUNNY AND BEAUTIFUL… Our story actually starts about 20 years ago. It wasn't until a month later on Valentine's Day before a Celtic's game that I asked the dreaded question: "What are we?" and he responded, "I thought you were already my girlfriend!" We laughed and walked and laughed and walked and took a helicopter ride and showed off our jenga skills and by the end of three days we had put in over 48k steps, and had probably just as many inside jokes. An impromptu invite to Vegas left me bewildered–do I go to Vegas of all places with a man I've only known for a few months? Looking back, I'm so glad I accepted that invite. In December, he showed off his adventurous side. We continued to talk for the next few months. Afterwards, we hung out in the parking lot for a while before deciding to catch a movie together. I was both impressed and weirded out by how he even tucked in his button down into his light wash jeans (see below or what I can only assume was his fashion inspiration). We had a great dinner–talked about everything and anything. Right off the bat, Mark learned about how I'm never on time to anything, and I learned about how Mark is honestly the most patient man on earth. As I finished up an email response, another email would pop up, then a phone call would come through, then someone would stop by for an updated document - I couldn't leave! I texted Mark multiple times during my delay, but didn't make it to the restaurant until 7:45! He wasn't mad, wasn't upset, but instead met me with the biggest smile and a huge hug (although looking back it might have been the moscow mules he was downing while he sat by himself). The foundation of a happy family had been built. At this point, the mutual notion was, "If we can live together in such a small place and we haven't killed each other yet, we can get through anything." In less than a year, we moved on to a bigger and better house together and adopted another dog soon after. Living together in such tight quarters was not always smooth and sweet (see below for a picture of pretty much the entire condo), but we plodded forward together to overcome the bumps in the road. Fast forward a year and half, and Jaclyn moved in with me into my little one-bedroom condo with her adorable dog Maeby. ![]() ![]() He writes that "a proper textualist" would have decided differently: "The phrase 'uses a gun' fairly connoted use of a gun for what guns are normally used for, that is, as a weapon. 281, 319 (1988) Scalia, J., concurring in part and dissenting in partĪs an illustrative example, Justice Scalia refers to a case in which the law provided for a longer sentence when the defendant "uses a firearm" "during and in relation to" a "drug trafficking crime." In the case, the defendant had offered to trade an unloaded gun as barter for cocaine, and the majority (wrongly, in his view) took this meeting the standard for the enhanced penalty. The phrase "of foreign manufacture" is a common usage, well understood to mean "manufactured abroad." While looking up the separate word "foreign" in a dictionary might produce the reading the majority suggests, that approach would also interpret the phrase "I have a foreign object in my eye" as referring, perhaps, to something from Italy. Words, like syllables, acquire meaning not in isolation but within their context. The statute excludes only merchandise "of foreign manufacture," which the majority says might mean "manufactured by a foreigner" rather than "manufactured in a foreign country." I think not. Textualism looks to the ordinary meaning of the language of the text, but it looks at the ordinary meaning of the text, not merely the possible range of meaning of each of its constituent words (see Noscitur a sociis): ![]() Hill, which looked to the dictionary definitions of words, without reference to common public understanding or context. A text should not be construed strictly, and it should not be construed leniently it should be construed reasonably, to contain all that it fairly means." Similarly, textualism should not be confused with the " plain meaning" approach, a simpler theory used prominently by the Burger Court in cases such as Tennessee Valley Authority v. I am not a strict constructionist, and no one ought to be. To illustrate this, we may quote Justice Scalia, who warns that "extualism should not be confused with so-called strict constructionism, a degraded form of textualism that brings the whole philosophy into disrepute. Nevertheless, although a textualist could be a strict constructionist, these are distinctive views. Strict constructionism is often misused by laypersons and critics as a synonym for textualism. Manning, "Textualism as a Nondelegation Doctrine", 97 Colum. These judges base their resistance to that interpretive practice on two major premises: first, that a 535-member legislature has no "genuine" collective intent concerning the proper resolution of statutory ambiguity (and that, even if it did, there would be no reliable basis for equating the views of a committee or sponsor with the "intent" of Congress as a whole) second, that giving weight to legislative history offends the constitutionally mandated process of bicameralism and presentment. ![]() Textualist judges have contended, with much practical impact, that courts should not treat committee reports or sponsors' statements as authoritative evidence of legislative intent. ![]() " The textualist cares about the statutory purpose to the extent that is suggested from the text. They look for the meaning "that a reasonable person would gather from the text of the law, placed alongside the remainder of the corpus juris. Textualists argue courts should read the words of a statutory text as any ordinary Member of Congress would have read them. We do not inquire what the legislature meant we ask only what the statutes mean." Textualism is often erroneously conflated with originalism, and was advocated by United States Supreme Court Justices such as Hugo Black and Antonin Scalia the latter staked out his claim in his 1997 Tanner Lecture: " is the law that governs, not the intent of the lawgiver." Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., although not a textualist himself, well-captured this philosophy, and its rejection of intentionalism: "We ask, not what this man meant, but what those words would mean in the mouth of a normal speaker of English, using them in the circumstances in which they were used. ![]() The textualist will "look at the statutory structure and hear the words as they would sound in the mind of a skilled, objectively reasonable user of words." The textualist thus does not give weight to legislative history materials when attempting to ascertain the meaning of a text. Textualism is a formalist theory in which the interpretation of the law is based exclusively on the ordinary meaning of the legal text, where no consideration is given to non-textual sources, such as intention of the law when passed, the problem it was intended to remedy, or significant questions regarding the justice or rectitude of the law. ![]() |
